“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need but not any man's greed” - Mahatma Gandhi
Quay-Studios is an artisanal studio printing small-batch hand-screened t-shirts since 2020. We are dedicated to producing our shirts in the most sustainable way possible because, as our message states, “There is no planet B.” In 1712, British ironmonger Thomas Newcomen invented the first widely used steam engine, which meant the beginning of burning coal on an industrial level. It has now been well over a hundred years since scientists first theorized that CO2 from industry has disastrous effects on our environment. Yet, our species continues to struggle to get our act together. We now have Floods, Fires, Droughts, Migrations, Storms, Hurricanes, Extreme Heat of record setting proportions. In 2006, in a laugh or cry moment, British comedian Rob Newman presented his stage show There Is No Planet B: A history of the world backwards. The phrase was later popularized by British researcher and writer Mike Berners-Lee in his 2019 book There Is No Planet B: A Handbook for the Make or Break Years, the rest is history.
At Quay-Studios we use water-based inks to print our shirts to stay true to our beliefs and because they are the best quality t-shirt printing you can do. These inks are more environmentally safe then the most commonly used PVC-based plastisol inks, which create dioxin as a by-product of production. PVC production is the largest source of dioxin pollution on the planet, and they are fat-soluble, meaning they work their way into our food chains, poisoning us from within. Plastisol is considered a solvent based medium which needs solvents, recognized as cancer causing agents, for clean up as well. Not to be too dark here but one of the basic building blocks for PVC is phosgene gas. Which is notoriously known as a nerve gas used during World War I.
Our shirts are produced using old school techniques and experience. A design shot on a screen, a squeegee, dollop of ink, pull a print, heat to cure, and washed once so what you see is what you get for the life of the shirt. The ink dyes the fabric so there is some natural fading over time like your favorite jeans, the print will outlast the shirt. We have been marketing these No Planet B shirts since 2020, vending at various events on a local level here in the historic Hudson River valley. With this web-site we hope to expand and acknowledge that mans greed has made our planet a mess and we need stand up and say so.
We donate 10% of our proceeds to the Riverkeeper organization.
